Sherman Elliott

Dr. Sherman Elliott is the founding dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Grand Canyon State University. Emphasizing the motto, cura personalis, as a mainstay of the college vision, he has served inclusively and collaboratively with innovative faculty and staff to enrich the lives of many learners in the social services humanities. Prior to joining GCU in 2011, he served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Secondary Education and Director of the Center for Civics Education at Arizona State University. Trained as an Ignatian educator, Dr. Elliott joyfully served over 11 years as a Catholic teacher and principal in the Diocese of Phoenix.
Dr. Elliott received his doctorate in Teaching Innovation and Leadership in 2009 from Arizona State University. He holds a B.A. in Government and an M.A. in Theology from the University of San Francisco. His passion resides in collaborating with faculty as they move their teaching and learning into a classroom of service and ministry to others. Dr. Elliott’s research interests include Holocaust education, history education, and adolescent moral development. One of his lifelong pursuits continues to be bearing witness to the generational suffering caused by the Holocaust by presenting effective means of teaching the Holocaust for pre-service and in-service teachers
