Did you know there is a difference between GCU’s engineering programs and engineering technology programs? There is! Both programs accomplish similar outcomes, but use different methods to get there.

Basic engineering is the application of math and science to solve problems and improve everyday life. Engineering is typically design-oriented and very conceptual. Engineers need a strong understanding of math and science to effectively put their ideas into action. In engineering, GCU offers biomedical engineering, engineering (general) and engineering with an emphasis in robotics.

On the other hand, engineering technology professionals graduates generally spend their time creating, manufacturing and testing products. Engineering technology professionals can be more hands-on and applied rather than conceptual. GCU offers two engineering technology programs: electrical engineering technology and mechanical engineering technology. While these programs sound very similar to the engineering programs, the courses are very different, and engineering technology prepares students for a more applied engineering career.

In the end, both engineers and engineering technology professionals will likely find themselves in jobs titled as “engineer.” Over time and through experience, engineering and engineering technology meld into one as the two fields collaborate heavily and rely on each other often.

As a freshman at GCU, you will have plenty of time to discover which field of engineering suits you better, and which you enjoy more. GCU’s faculty and staff have lots of experience and are happy to help you find your passion and answer any questions you may have.

So how do you know which path is right for you? It depends on what you are interested in, what you do in your free time and what you picture when you think of engineering. If you are more design-oriented and imagine sitting at a computer developing cell phones and jets, then engineering might be the path for you. If you are more hands-on and enjoy taking things apart and manufacturing your ideas, then you might be more suited for engineering technology.

Work with your admissions counselor to determine which program is the best fit for you.
