Weekly Devotional: God in Art
For centuries, art has been a profound way for humans to express their innermost thoughts, emotions and experiences. For many, it is a pathway to understanding the world around them and even a way to connect with the divine. In many respects, art holds the potential to bridge the gap between the material and the spiritual. Explore how you can find God in art — whether through creating, contemplating or experiencing the work of others.

Visio Divina
If you enjoy connecting with God through beautiful things, such as art or the wonders of creation, you may consider engaging in the practice of visio divina, a Latin phrase translating to “divine seeing.” It is a way to intentionally seek and worship God through the appreciation of creation.
This form of prayer is commonly done through artwork. Use the following steps as a guide for your own practice:
1. Select: Find an image or a painting that you find beautiful or resonates with you.
2. Pause: Take a moment to breathe and quiet your mind. Ask for God's presence and guidance during your time of reflection.
3. Gaze: Look at the art with open eyes and an open heart. Take your time. Allow your eyes to wander over the details without rushing.
4. Notice: Begin to make observations and consider what stands out to you. Ask yourself, what emotions does this evoke in me? How does this connect with my life? What might God be trying to communicate to me?
5. Respond: Finally, share any thoughts, feelings or questions with God, and thank him for meeting with you. What reminder do you want to take with you from the artwork?
As you continue to explore this practice, may you begin to see God more and more through the beauty around you.
Spiritual Practices
In addition to visio divina, there are other spiritual practices that can help you connect with God in art. Here are some more ideas to get started:
- Use your five senses to pray.
- Paint or draw a picture relating to a passage from Scripture.
- Meditate on a song that speaks to your heart.
- Write a poem expressing your adoration for God.
- Intentionally worship God on a hike in nature.
- Visit an art museum and listen to what God may speak to you through various art forms.
- When you notice God’s beauty in the simple things of everyday life, take a photo and add it to an album on your phone for reflection.
God is a detailed and creative being who desires to reveal himself to you in unique ways. Take time to explore the many ways you can connect with God in art, and watch as you grow in appreciation, awareness and awe of Him.
