Rising Talent Spotlight: Harrison Russell
Grand Canyon University’s Center of Worship Arts is proud to announce a new release: “You Have Won Me” by Harrison Russell featuring Marissa Lynn. Russell is currently a sophomore pursuing his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Worship Arts. He recorded this album single in the GCU Recording Studio and hopes that it will one day become a corporate worship song.
“This song is about identity,” Russell explained. “It says, ‘I belong to the Lord.’”
After graduation in 2019, Russell feels God is calling him to work in full-time ministry in the local church as a worship pastor. In this position, he hopes to not only lead the church in song, but to lead them relationally as well. He feels like God has gifted him with music by placing songs in his heart for a reason. Russell wants to continue pursuing songs because of his love and passion for them, whether it is in the local church or beyond. Ultimately, he wants what God would have for him and is willing to let God determine that position.
In reflecting on the song, Russell definitely thinks it could become a corporate worship song, “especially during a time of response or as a call to action for people.” He said that he performed it last year for his church back home and “there was just a certain power in the words: ‘Jesus I’m running home, I’m letting go of everything, take hold of me.’ I think it grabs people.”
He described the feeling in that moment as his congregation was not merely singing a song, but they were also truly “getting the message” and understanding the point of the song.
Russell hopes the song will continue to have an impact. His heart and desire is that others will find their identity in Christ.
“Always remember that your identity is found in Christ,” he said. “The sacrifice that He paid for you and the love that He has for you outmatch anything the world would throw at you or the enemy would throw at you. His power is strong, and His love is greater.”
Russell’s song “You Have Won Me” is available on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play.
