Fire Standards and Evidence-Based Practice - Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Fire Science will know how to apply research, standards, and evidence-based best practices to the fire service. They will be able to:
- Identify best practices to avoid legal liability in the fire service.
- Make evidence-based recommendations for fire service practices.
- Write a fire service-related research proposal.
- Use fire service standards to support sound decision making.
Fire Service Management and Administration - Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Fire Science will know the many duties and responsibilities of fire service management professionals and the skills required for effective fire service administration. They will be able to:
- Recommend solutions to personnel management issues based on applicable laws and policies.
- Write a personnel management policy that follows employment law.
- Design a promotional process that follows ethical and legal standards.
- Recommend professional development opportunities that align with departmental goals and community expectations.
- Develop a budget based on expected tax revenue and recurring expenses.
Fire Suppression and Risk-Reduction - Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Fire Science will know best practices for fire-prevention and code enforcement, to make effective incident and risk management plans. They will be able to:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of fire-prevention efforts.
- Evaluate fire code enforcement practices.
- Design an incident management plan to mitigate the dangers when addressing an incident.
Leadership in the Fire Service - Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Fire Science will know the importance of leadership in the fire service and how to apply leadership principles to shape a department into an effective team. They will be able to:
- Develop a mission, vision, and value statement for a fire department.
- Apply principles of Christian Ethics to a leadership situation.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of various leadership styles.
- Develop a policy that defines codes of conduct that reflect an agency's guiding principles.
